Why Vegan Nammoura?
Many people attribute weight gain in Ramadan to the abundance of traditional sweet treats. Which are unfortunately characteristic. However, these are sweets that carved their way into my heart and (and tummy) way back when in my childhood.
At the top of that list, Nammoura (Basbousa). Followed narrowly by Qatayef. Also sometimes called Hareesa, Basbousa. It is a simple semolina cake, soaked in syrup and gracefully adorned with blanched almonds. It’s exceedingly simple to make. As for healthy – at the end of the day dessert is dessert. It’s not exactly low calorie. But you can rest assured this version of Nammoura (Basbousa), is definitely healthier than the average. Rich with healthy fats, protein and fiber.
I didn’t appreciate these “simpler” desserts until I was a bit older, I was reflecting on the simplicity of it.
This cake (Nammoura) is not just easy to make but is quick to put together too.
Nammoura is your best choice when you are ready for an extra sweet treat. It is probably the sweetest cake you can get. The yeast gives it its spongy texture, and the sugar syrup gives it its distinctive extra sweet taste. It is relatively easy to prepare, and it is thus often homemade.
Semolina dough, topped with Almond, and baked to express a golden look, and sweetened with sugar syrup.
